World wildlife Fund (WWF)
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), founded in 1961, is an international organization, not run by the government, that is working on preserving the wilderness, and reducing humans footprint on the environment("About Us", n.d.). WWF works it's local communities, regional authorities, government and other non-government organizations to save the Amur leopard. They support anti-poaching work in all Amur leopard habitats across eastern Russia and China. They are trying to play t into the fee to programs to stop illegal trade of Amur leopard parts. With the help of TRAFFIC, the worlds largest wildlife trade monitoring network, they assist the government in enforcing domestic and international trade restrictions on Amur leopard products("Amur Leopard", n.d.).
They are also trying to help increase the population of leopard prey such as the roe deer, sika deer and wild boar. The final way they are helping the Amur leopard specie is by protecting their habitat. They are trying to increase areas of protected land in both Russia and China. They even, in 2007 wit the help of other conservationists, persuaded the Russian government to reroute an oil pipeline that was already planned, this pipeline would have endangered the leopards habitat("Amur Leopard", n.d.). |
Zoological Society of London (ZSL)
The Zoological Society of London, is a coordinating member of ALTA, which is the amur leopard and tiger alliance. They provide information to the public about Amur conservation. ZSL is working with other zoos to build a captive population that may be used to release leopards back into the wild in the future. ZSL and other non- governed organizations plan to create a second population of Amur leopard in s reserve in their former range. ZSL coordinates both the European/Russian zoo conservation breeding programme.
ZSL conducts wildlife health projects to provide veterinary training, a diagnostics laboratory and biological sample collection in order to set a start point for future disease monitoring work. ZSL is working with other zoos to build a captive population that may be used to release leopards back into the wild in the future("Amur Leopard and Tiger Conservation", n.d.). |
WCS Russia
The Wildlife Conservation Society(WCS) is a non governmental, science based organization that works in over 50 countries around the world. Their mission is to conserve wildlife and ecosystems by applying scientific and field based solutions to critical problems.("WCS Russia", n.d.).
Wcs is carrying out different scientific researches to improve the understanding of the Amur leopard, also to protect its habitat. They have used camera trapping to estimate the number of leopard population over time, which can help in determining its rate of growth. They teamed up with TIGIS and Tigris to study the impact of fires in leopard habitats. They started a fire suppression and presentation project in 2009, in the area they started their work in they saw a 99% burn reduction in 2011 and a 80% reduction in 2012. They worked with Phoenix Fund to creat the SMART patrol monitoring system. It provides support for anti-poaching patrols and funds for incentive system tang rewards patrol teams. This caused an increase in patrol efforts, and resulted in an increase in law enforcement results such as confiscated fire arms and fines for poaching and other violations("Amur Leopard Conservation", n.d.). |
